Liverpool faced a trip to Stoke City on Saturday evening in the Premier League, with hopes that they could continue the run of good form they had managed before they drew at Wigan on Wednesday.

It was not to prove the case, however, as Stoke, always competitive at home, had the better of play for much of the match. In the first half they battled hard, but no breakthrough could be found, despite the typical confusion caused by Rory Delap’s throw-ins.

The second period was far more fruitful for the Potters though, as they took the lead through Ricardo Fuller after a scramble, and then Kenwyne Jones scored his team’s second after a quick counter-attack. Lucas was sent off too, compounding the Reds’ misery as they lost 2 – 0.

Earlier, following Villa and United’s exciting draw in the lunchtime match, Man City caused more frustration for their fans by being held to a 0 – 0 score line at Eastlands by Birmingham, and Tottenham Hotspur earned an impressive 4 - 2 win at home against Blackburn.
