Yesterday Hungarian officials arrested Zoltan Bakonyi, the CEO of Mal Hungarian Aluminum Production, the company responsible for last week’s devastating toxic sludge spill.

Bakonyi was taken into custody for questioning as fears mount that another reservoir wall could burst, causing even more destruction. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison for public endangerment and widespread environmental damage. He denies the charges.

The spill that occurred last Monday resulted in millions of gallons of toxic waste being dumped into local villages and rivers. The same amount of liquid that leaked throughout BP’s oil disaster was reportedly spilled within the first few hours.

The Hungarian government has placed the company’s assets under state control to ensure funds are available to compensate the many people affected by this tragedy. Over 700 residents remain evacuated and parts of the nearby village of Kolontar have been deemed as uninhabitable.
